Summer drive with performance tiresWarm weather is finally here.  As you prepare to enjoy summer in your local community, you may be jotting down items on your seasonal to-do list: landscaping, a new grill, camping gear, etc.  Are summer tires on your list? If not, you might need to add a new task.

Summer tires are often referred to as “performance” or “high performance” tires and typically contain a tire speed rating of H, V, Z, or ZR.  This makes them an ideal choice for vehicles that require maximum tire performance and handling.  The tread is typically less aggressive (than winter or all-season tires) and constructed of large tread blocks with strong lateral rigidity.  Most summer tires possess wide circumferential grooves which help to efficiently expel water.  They are actually manufactured from a softer rubber which provides a tight grip on the road and enables sharp turns on dry, hot pavement.  The rubber formulation is optimized for warm and wet weather driving conditions and thus do not provide adequate traction in the cold climates.

Although we are all too familiar with snow tires, now often referred to as winter tires, many people fail to think about summer tires.  Summer tires are designed to give you exceptional control and maximum performance in hot summer conditions. Many manufactures feature summer tires with treads that are specifically designed to improve vehicle handling and produce a quiet ride.  Whether you are looking for ultimate driving performance, a smooth ride, or simply the coolest look, there’s a summer tire that’s right for you.

All tire types have advantages and disadvantages.  Winter tires, while offering better performance on ice and snow, tend to reduce gas mileage.  Summer tires, while providing incomparable handling, tend to wear out quicker.  Furthermore, with their less aggressive treads, summer tires are never recommended for winter driving.  All-season tires are middle of the road – while they may offer adequate year-round performance, they will not offer the heightened driving experience that many drivers desire.

If you keep your winter tires – or even all-season tires – on in the summer, your vehicle may perform at less than maximum efficiency.  Summer tires enable your car to perform its best on highways and back roads all summer.  This is good news for you as you drive to your favorite hot dog stand, head to the State Fair, or drive to the beach for a day of fun in the sun.

If you are not sure if you need summer tires, you can stop in to consult with the Tire Pros.  We’ll take a look at your existing tires, answer any questions you may have about summer tires, and help you figure out what is best for your vehicle.  Before you head to the beach, please take a minute and share your personal summer tire story.  Enjoy your summer!

This makes them an ideal choice for vehicles that require maximum tire performance and handling.
