Key to Safe Teen DrivingThe Official tire of the Buffalo Bills, Kumho Tire, in conjunction with Key Bank and Dunn Tire, have announced that the free “Key to Safe Teen Driving” program is returning to Buffalo, while adding a stop in Rochester.  The program is to be held at Monroe Community College in Rochester July 30th & 31st, and Erie Community College South Campus in Buffalo August 2nd & 3rd.

As a “Thank You” to participants, Kumho Tire will provide each participant with a pair of tickets to the Kumho Tire-sponsored Bills training camp night practice at St. John Fisher College on August 14th , which is a ticket required practice.

The traveling teen driving school is conducted by professional instructors from the Mid-Ohio School and is designed specifically for teenage drivers between the ages of 16 and 20. Teens will learn driving skills that are not taught in normal driver’s education programs. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15-to-20-year-olds, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Kumho brought this to Buffalo last summer, and every available spot was reserved” said Chuck Haring, director, marketing & advertising for Dunn Tire “Parents and teens gave it fantastic reviews and we are lucky to get it back again. We’re also very glad we could bring it to Rochester for the first time. This is something we feel is very beneficial for teen drivers”.

The free “Key to Safe Teen Driving” class will offer four separate sessions each day for area teens. The three hour sessions will begin at 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., and 3 p.m. and include a classroom session and hands-on drills involving wet-braking, skid control and emergency lane change. The wet-braking and emergency lane change drills will be conducted using each participant’s street-legal automobile.

Program instruction will include the physics and dynamics of driving, defensive driving and responsible behavior, wet-braking, emergency lane changes and collision-avoidance, slalom and weight-transfer maneuvers, and adverse weather conditions, among many other topics. Experiential learning will take place in each participant’s own vehicle as well as in the program’s Honda Civic Skid Car. Vehicle maintenance and a tire changing demonstrations will also occur during the program. The Mid-Ohio School has offered performance driving and defensive driving programs for adults and teenagers since 1993.

The number of participants per class is limited, and any teen with a valid driver’s license or driving permit may sign up. Participants must show proof insurance and have use of a vehicle for the event.
