Aren’t tires all the same?

What's the difference in what you get when you pay more money for a tire? This seems to be a common question among consumers. Aren't all tires basically the same?

Actually, no – today's tires are engineered for precision and handling under a variety of road and weather conditions. While you're overall safety may be your biggest concern, there are several factors you want to consider when buying new tires.

For example take a look at a standard economy radial versus a higher-end tire. The economy radial offers a 40,000 mile warranty while the higher-end tire is backed by a 70,000 mile warranty. This is due to the softer rubber compound used in economy radial tires. The more durable rubber used in higher-end tires is designed to last longer. For that simple reason, the tire is guaranteed for about 80% more mileage.

Additionally, the higher-end tire is sold with deeper tread depth (13/32" versus 10/32" in the economy radial). This means you're literally getting more tire for your purchase with a higher-end tire. Plus you're getting more traction and control. The softer compound with less tread depth will be showing visible signs of wear much sooner.

Furthermore, the tread design will vary. The higher-end tire uses more siping, strategic channels to evacuate wet weather, and wider shoulder grooves. This is important in most regions of the US. Sometimes the old adage is true – you get what you pay for. If you are looking for longer lasting tires that provide better traction and handling, you may want to test drive a higher-end tire.
